Sealing stone tiles is extremely important. Whether you have a natural stone floor or manmade tiles, a stone sealing product acts as a shield against potential stains and the build up of dirt.
Our Top Tip to Sealing Stone Tiles
Don’t forget your grout lines. It’s important to seal your grout lines. This will prevent discolouration and will help it repel the dirt and grime that tends to get pushed into the lines. Taking care of your grout will elongate the lifespan of your stone floor. If grout starts to deteriorate, it will likely crack. If liquid were to get into these cracks (however small), they will quickly worsen. This creates issues that are often hard to fix.
Did you know that there are two types of stone sealers available? These include Impregnating Sealer and a Topical Sealer. Each products have their best intended uses so it is well worth investing time into finding which one would suit your needs.
Impregnating Sealer Products
This is a solvent-based sealer that offers a matte finish. As the name suggests, it penetrates the surface of your tiles, which allows them to breathe. Impregnating sealers are well suited to areas of the home where you may experience moisture and damp. This includes bathrooms, wet rooms, kitchens and utility rooms.
There are two options available when considering an impregnating sealer product. The first option is a colour enhancer, which as the name suggests, enhances the natural colouration of the stone. The other option is a clear sealer which doesn’t alter the colour of the tiles.
Topical Sealer Products
These products are a water-based acrylic sealing agent. It essentially forms a film over the surface. It enhances the appearance of the tile and produces a shinier finish. Generally topical sealers aren’t breathable but there are now such products that don’t make the tiles as shiny. It all depends on what you prefer.
This is an Indian sandstone floor we were asked to clean in Stanah. The stone floor was in good condition in most parts, but the client has had problems trying to keep the floor clean. By adding a seal really makes a difference to how easy it is to keep clean but also help to repel stains and spillages.
